The Statistical Review breaks down teams along a number of performance categories, everything from red zone scoring to field goal percentage, and compares that performance against the rest of the FBS. All 124 teams will be reviewed from 124 to 1 by the hybrid rankings. You can find short descriptions in the table below.
New Mexico State scored touchdowns on 75% of their trips into the red zone. That would be impressive (tied for 7th best nationally), but no team made fewer red zone trips than the Aggies. NMSU was also above average defending in the red zone and only slightly below average defending 3rd downs. In other words, they were feet and ankles below every FBS team this year overall, but made up substantial ground by playing well in high leverage situations - red zone and 3rd down.
